Why Zinc Oxide Is Used In Natural And Organic Sunscreens

What Is Zinc Oxide?

Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound, a natural mineral, and is white in colour.

Why Is Zinc Oxide Used In Sunscreen?

Zinc oxide naturally reflects the damaging ultraviolet rays that cause skin aging and cancer. It is a physical sunscreen that sits on top of our skin. It is a safe and effective ingredient in natural and organic sunscreens with no known adverse reactions, which is why it is often used to treat babies. Since zinc oxide protects against the UVA and UVB spectrum, it is the closest thing to a total sunblock on the market today. There is no other sunscreen ingredient that provides a better and broader sun protection.

“Zinc oxide based sunscreens are considered better than chemical sunscreens”

How Do Chemical Sunscreens Work?

Chemical sunscreens work differently to offer sun protection. They work by absorbing UV rays rather than reflecting them unlike a physical sunscreen.  They also contain a variety of harmful ingredients such as:

· Octyl-methoxycinnamate

· Oxybenzone

· Cinoxate

· Avobenzone

· Homosalate

· Octisalate

· Octocrylene

· Oxybenzone

· Oxtinoxate

· Menthyl Anthranilate

· Oxtocrylene

Some chemical ingredients are known to cause hormonal disruption, nervous system concerns, allergy triggers, DNA damage, or produce free radicals that are toxic to the cells. To avoid exposing my skin to these harmful ingredients, I use the Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm to protect my skin from sun damage.

Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm Review

The Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm is a water-free nourishing balm with a SPF 15. It doesn’t wash off unless you use soap and water. It has about 22% zinc oxide and have natural and organic ingredients, such as, natural vitamin E, beta carotene and rosemary extract, that have antioxidant properties to protect your skin from sun damage.

Although zinc oxide is the active ingredient in this product, this white powdered mineral will not make you look white when you apply it on your skin. The zinc oxide has been engineered to become micro-fine so that it can easily blend with other ingredients to present a clear and non white appearance.

How To Apply Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm?

All you have to do is give this product a really good mix like this. Apply generously to skin 20 minutes before exposure to sunlight. Then re-apply every two hours.

It should be stored under 30 degrees, so don’t leave it in your hot car during summer time.

Sunscreen is not the only way to protect yourself from sun damage. Remember to cover up with clothes, look for shade or shelter, and wear a hat.

Making Bioplastic Stamps

Have you ever heard of eco-friendly or green plastic before? Bioplastic is the name that I came across recently. At lease these plastics are biodegradable and won’t harm our planet!

I thought I would have a bit of fun just making things with a few simple ingredients to make these bioplastics. What came to my mind was bioplastic stamps in whatever shape you desire. If you have your favorite mould at home, you can actually make bioplastic stamps with those mould.

Watch my video below which shows you how I made small butterfly stamps!

All you need is three basic ingredients and a few tools

4 teaspoons Gelatin

1/2 teaspoon Glycerin

1/4 cup Water

  • Mix ingredients first, then set heat to high so that it starts to boil. Then take it away from heat and let it sit briefly.
  • Spoon out froth, then pour clear liquid into moulds
  • Remove remaining bubbles from mould
  • Let it set and they should be ready to use for your crafty projects

Hope you have found this post useful! You can try this yourself and have a bit of fun with it too!

How To Make Your Own Probiotic

eating yoghurtHave you ever thought about making your own probiotic? Recently, I have been making my own delicious probiotic to keep myself healthy. It’s not necessary to go out and buy ready-made ones like fruity yoghurt, probiotic drinks, or capsules.

If you make your own, at least you will know exactly what you have put into it. You can include the fruits that you love and enjoy it more.

If you don’t already know what probiotic is… it is the beneficial bacteria that are added to certain foods like yoghurt to help improve your health. Probiotics are good for those who are on antibiotic treatment too because it will replenish your gut with beneficial bacteria and keep the balance. You can read the article called ‘Probiotics are good for people on antibiotics’ HERE!

Recently, I have been experimenting with a few of my favorite fruits to make my own probiotic. I love strawberries and blueberries because they are sweet, have good levels of antioxidants, and are high in vitamin C. I also love the taste of pear as well. So I filled my blender cup with these three fruits.

P1010557 P1010558

Then, I scooped a blob of natural greek yoghurt, which contains mainly milk and bacterial cultures, and filled the cup with enough milk.

For an extra alkalising effect from my home-made probiotic, I used one teaspoon of the Miessence DeepGreen Alkalising Superfood. This product contains freeze dried certified organic blue-green algae, green grass juices and leafy green vegetables. Adding this into the mix will help detoxify and alkalise my cells, boost my immune system, and give me that feeling of having more energy. You can find out more about this product HERE!

Once all the ingredients have been added, the attachment with blades are screwed onto the cup and ready to blend until everything has been mixed well and smooth. Then a lid is placed on the cup so that it can be stored in the fridge for a little later during the day. I usually have it straight away!

 P1010562 P1010563

Here is my cup of nutritious, alkalising, and healthy probiotic for the day! It was absolutely delicious!

It’s always best to drink it on the day it was made. If you don’t like milk, you can always use other types of liquids like soymilk, almond milk, or rice milk. It is worth experimenting with different types of ingredients to find out what you like most.

I really like making my own probiotic. How about you?

Natural Suncreens Don’t Need Chemicals To Work

woman-applying-suntan-lotion-at-the-beachThere are still many people who will choose to buy sunscreen that have all kinds of nasty ingredients used for providing protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Some of these toxic ingredients include Octyl-methoxycinnamate and Oxybenzone, which are absorbed into the skin.

But with natural sunscreens, having zinc oxide as the natural active ingredient is effective enough to protect from the full spectrum of UVA and UVB rays.

Zinc Oxide Sunscreens

The best zinc oxide sunscreens are those that have 20 – 25% of this ingredient in the product. This high percentage of zinc oxide are mostly found in a natural SPF 30 sunscreen.

Zinc oxide is a mineral that is considered safe according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), and it provides a physical barrier against the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. These minerals act like tiny mirrors to reflect them away from your skin so that you won’t suffer from sunburn. zinc oxide

There is a difference between a chemical-based sunscreen and a mineral-based sunscreen. The chemical-based sunscreens must absorb into your skin to be effective via a chemical reaction with the sun’s UV rays.

Whereas, a mineral-based sunscreen doesn’t get absorbed, but rather sits on the surface of your skin to block the harmful rays. This is why zinc oxide sunscreens are sometimes referred to as “sunblock”.

Zinc oxide sunscreens are normally thicker and harder to rub on compared to chemical-based ones, but they are still highly effective and a safe alternative to use, which allows you to avoid exposing yourself to harmful ingredients.

If you love the beach and the sun during warmer seasons and need to wear sunscreen frequently, why expose yourself to chemicals when there is a safer alternative around?

Jessica Alba’s Honest Company Natural Suncreen Lotion SPF30 Failed…Why?

Only recently, I have come across a few articles of the many customer complaints made against Jessica Alba’s The Honest Company Suncreen lotion SPF30. The sunscreen failed to work leaving angry customers venting their frustrations on social media, such as Twitter. I have seen some pictures of those nasty burns that some of these customers had to deal with.

This prompted me to visit The Honest Company’s website to take a look at their ingredients list to determine why the sunscreen lotion did not work for these people.

When I saw the non-nano zinc oxide active ingredient was 9.3%, that probably explains why people got sunburnt. Their sunscreen lotion was reformulated earlier in 2015 where zinc oxide was reduced while other ingredients were added to the formulation.

The Honest Company’s response to customer complaints is shown below. I just wonder, how can this sunscreen confer an SPF 30 protection with less than 10% zinc oxide? Even if people shook it well before applying onto their skin, if there is not enough zinc oxide then how can it reflect the sun’s UV rays away? The Honest Company Response

There may be other factors involved, but knowing that the main active ingredient that is responsible for providing sun protection has been reduced doesn’t sit well with me. If I am going to be confident that I won’t get burnt, I would prefer to buy a mineral sunscreen with at least 20% zinc oxide in it. That’s my personal opinion anyway.

If you want to read more about this story, read the article HERE

Apart from their sunscreen, I do believe that The Honest Company is making a good initiative to help parents and babies have safer alternatives by providing natural and organic products. They have some really great looking products on their website!

Going back to sunscreen, there is an article that I wrote early this year called “Protection from a natural sunscreen is better than a chemical one”. If you are interested, read this article HERE

miessence reflect outdoor balmMy personal favorite zinc oxide sunscreen is the Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm, which has 22% zinc oxide.

I have never been burnt using this product and have recommended it to many of my friends who are looking for safer sunscreens.

If this sunscreen has been sitting on the shelf for a while, the product may not appear uniform, so needs a good mix first before application.

This product has a pleasant smell and I don’t look white when I apply on my skin. Even in the most hottest days, I still did not get burnt…so I am confident that this sunscreen does a great job!

If you want to find out more about this natural sunscreen, read more about it HERE

Mineral-based sunscreens is a better and safer alternative to chemical-based ones. It usually contains the active ingredient zinc oxide in the product. Usually a product needs to have at least 20 – 25% of zinc oxide to provide an effective physical barrier to reflect off the harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Burts Bees Co-Founder Burt Shavitz Dies At 80

Burt Shavitz

Burt Shavitz, the co-founder for the popular personal care products brand, Burt’s Bees, has been reported to have died at aged 80 on Sunday 6th July 2015.

He was an unconventional US beekeeper who passed away among his family and friends in his home town, Maine, due to respiratory complications. (source).

Burt’s Bees, is well known all around the world with Mr Shavitz’s iconic face and scraggly beard featured on the packaging of his line of products.

Success Story Of Burt’s Bees

Before Mr Shavitz became a beekeeper and launching the very successful, Burt’s Bees business, he was a New York City-based photographer whose photos were published in magazines such as Time and Life. (source)

It was in 1984 in Maine where Mr Shavitz first met his partner, Roxanne Quimby, while hitching.

Mr Shavitz had a honey business at that time. So when the company, Burt’s Bees, was founded, the pair began making and selling candles from the excess beeswax provided by the beehives.

By 1991, the Burt’s Bees product range had expanded to include other natural products not just candles. These products were natural soaps, perfumes, and lip balm.

The Burt’s Bees best-selling product is the lipbalm. It is still the best-seller today!

burts bees productsIn 1994, Mr Shavitz and Ms Quimby ended their partnership due to personal relationship troubles. Ms Quimby forced Mr Shavitz out of the business and bought his share in the company.

So Burt’s Bees was eventually relocated to North Carolina to be closer to other personal care product manufacturers.

This successful company eventually went global in 1999, and in 2007, Clorox bought Burt’s Bees for a reported $US925 million.

From 2007 to now, Burt’s Bees manufactured over 197 personal care products, which are distributed in almost 30,000 retail outlets across the world from their headquarters in North Carolina.

Personal Experience With Burt’s Bees Products

My favorite Burt’s Bees products is their lip care range. I really love their wide range of lip colors. I have experience with the lipbalms have been a very positive one.

Rather than wearing products that are branded as “lipsticks”, which costs anywhere from $AU20 – $AU40,  I just use the Burt’s Bees lip Shimmer. It’s much cheaper and also 100% natural!

The below is a before and after shot that I have taken of my lips. I used the Burt’s Bees Watermelon Lip Shimmer.

Burts Bees lipcolour_Before Burts Bees Lipcolour_After

Burt’s Bees products can be bought in many places such as chemists, grocery stores, health shops, and online. But I enjoy the convenience of online shopping, so sometimes I purchase my Burt’s Bees products online at eVitamins.

The lip shimmer costs $4.99. It’s SO CHEAP! :) You can check it out online here. CLICK HERE!

Thanks for reading this post.

RIP Burt Shavitz. You have made a huge difference in the personal care industry with your fantastic range of natural products! We don’t need harmful chemicals in our products!

Can Animals Get Sunburn?

parrotMost animals live outdoors and are usually exposed to the sun. But, unlike humans, why don’t they suffer from sunburn? Do you ever wonder why this is the case?

Well, after doing some digging, I found out why….some animal species basically produce their own sunscreen! How interesting!

This was discovered recently by scientists from Oregon State University and published in the journal eLife. They have found that many fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds are capable for producing a natural compound called Gadusol. This compound offers these animals protection from the harmful UV rays.

Gadusol is a natural sunscreen and also an antioxidant as well.

More about gadusol can be read HERE!

zebrafishIt was previously thought that fish acquired gadusol from their environment, such as eating bacteria, algae, and fungi that produced these compounds.

But after the scientists from Oregon State University conducted some experiments with yeast, their findings suggest that zebrafish were capable of producing these natural sunscreen compounds internally.

Since fish and other animals species are able to produce these compounds, it makes them safe for ingestion. There is a future prospect in making sunscreen pills, lotions, and cosmetics by using yeast to mass produce the natural compound, gadusol. However, further research into this area is needed.

I can imagine how convenient it would be to just take a sunscreen pill and go outdoors rather than taking time to rub sunscreen all over my body. It sounds quick and easy!

Woman Hands Putting Sunscreen From A Bottle On The BeachMany conventional sunscreens are made up of some harmful ingredients that are just not good for our bodies. So if this natural sunscreen pill is available in the future, then I would give it a go and see how it goes.

In the mean time, I still avoid applying any harmful substances on my body by using a mineral sunscreen from Miessence, which contains the essential ingredient, ZINC OXIDE, that provides an effective protection against the harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Find out why protection from a natural sunscreen is better than a chemical one. CLICK HERE!

How lucky are those animals who can produce their own sunscreen…makes me feel a little envious of them. :)

The Dangers Of Synthetic Fragrances – Avoid Them!

Avoid fragranceMany people don’t realize the dangers of synthetic fragrances. Many of our products include the ingredient, fragrance or parfum, to give the product a pleasant scent.

This ingredient is found in many personal care products, such as, shampoos, cosmetics, perfumes, deodorants, body lotions, and skin care products.

Just because the manufacturers include this ingredient in their products, it doesn’t mean that it is safe!

Health Effects Of Synthetic Fragrances

Do you know that synthetic fragrance will expose you to hundreds of chemicals that you know nothing about, and are hazardous to your health? Synthetic fragrance are simply a mixture of chemicals that create a particular scent. To some, the scent may be luxurious and pleasant, and to others it may be a huge turn off.

Different mixtures of chemicals will create many variations of scent. The problem with the ingredients list in many products is that it only list the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’, so there is no way of knowing what harmful chemicals is in the product. Manufacturers like to keep their ‘secret formula’ to themselves!

poisonThe main reason why manufacturers use synthetic fragrance in their products is because it’s so much cheaper to produce scent compared to producing them naturally.

When ever I see a bottle of perfume, the first thing I think of is a bottle of poison. That’s really what it is – a cocktail of toxic chemicals!

According to Safe Cosmetics Australia, artificial substances like fragrances are known to cause respiratory reactions like asthma, contact dermatitis as well as cancer and accumulative toxicity.

Natural News says that the list of chemicals in synthetic fragrances often includes formaldehyde, toluene, methylene chloride, benzaldehyde, petroleum, and phthalates. These harmful chemicals cause all kinds of health issues.

In the cosmetic maze shopping companion book, fragrance is not assessed for safe use in cosmetics, and the potential effects include suspected immuno and neuro toxicity, allergic reactions, and asthma. Fragrance is used in most cosmetics and household products.

Pregnant women should avoid synthetic fragrances

pregnant womenOne of the toxic chemicals of concern in synthetic fragrance are phthalates as they are known as endocrine disruptors, which mimics human hormones.

According to a report by the University of Maryland, exposure to phthalates may be linked to various health issues, such as, reproductive abnormalities, lower levels of testosterone production in boys, affects male fertility, premature delivery and endometriosis in women.

Women who are pregnant really should avoid perfumes to protect their unborn child from health issues!

To avoid phthalate exposure, you can check the ingredients list of your own personal care products and see if they have ingredients like these:

  • DBP (dibutylphthalate)
  • DMP (dimethylphthalate)
  • DEP (diethylphthalate)
  • DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate)
  • BzBP (benzylbutyl phthalate)

How To Protect Yourself And Your Family?

We all want to smell nice! But, why put your health at risk and you can avoid it and find natural/organic alternatives? Synthetic fragrances need to be avoided as much as possible. It’s important that you read the ingredients labels. PROTECT YOURSELF

  • Look for products that are ‘unscented’, ‘fragrance-free’, or scents that are naturally derived or plant based.
  • Choose certified organic products because they do not use synthetic fragrances, only natural scent. I highly recommend Miessence Certified Organic Range.
  • Avoid products that have the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ in their ingredient list. Most likely they are synthetic chemicals.
  • Buy products from your local health shop or look for brands online that avoid using synthetic fragrances in their products.

Don’t let the manufacturers of personal care and cosmetic products decide what you should be applying on yourself through their clever marketing. It’s all about money and profits for them! What is more important is being informed of the dangers of toxic chemical ingredients, and taking appropriate steps to look after you and your family’s health.

spraySynthetic fragrances are so common in our products that most people think it’s ok to use. But when the truth comes out about the potential health issues that these toxic chemicals are associated with frequent application, then people need to decide what they want to do about it.

Do they want to keep exposing themselves to hundreds of toxic chemicals everyday? or seek for healthier alternatives?

I personally do not use perfume, only the Miessence Tahitian Breeze Roll-on Deodorant, which has a light and natural scent that keeps my body odor controlled. It really works for me!

You can read about my review on a variety of natural deodorants HERE!

Is Ginger Good For A Cold?

cold and fluThe winter season has arrived in Australia. It’s June now and some days are freezing cold, especially in the mornings.

I always make sure that I wear warm clothing including socks to bed because my feet tend to feel the cold during the night.

In the cold season, there are many people who suffer from the cold and flu. Ginger is something that came to my mind today.

Ginger contains healing and medicinal properties and has various benefits. It can be used as a natural remedy for colds and flu, great for circulation, digestion, and nausea, and helps with motion and sea sickness.

So if you are sick during this cold weather, it’s good to serve up a piping hot ginger tea.

A while ago, I bought a bottle of non-alcoholic Rochester Ginger to make a variety of drinks when ever I feel like it.

But during my sick days, I usually make myself a hot cup of lemon and honey drink and add some of this ginger into it. This ginger can be used alone too. Just add 50ML Rochester Ginger into hot water, stir, and drink up!

Rochester Ginger

Rochester Ginger can be bought from Amazon, which is located on your right side for your convenience. Just type in Rochester Ginger on the search and choose which one you want to purchase.

There is no need to take pharmaceutical cough and flu syrups to combat your symptoms when natural remedies are available.

So take care of yourself and look for natural and effective alternatives like Ginger for your sick days.
