How To Use Coconut Oil For Skin And Hair

coconut oilLast year, I was given a jar of certified organic coconut oil for christmas and wondered what I should use this oil for other than cooking.

The appearance of this coconut oil varied depending on the surrounding temperature. It looks white and solid when the room is below 18 degrees. It becomes liquid when the room is warm, especially during warmer days.

Coconut oil is a multipurpose oil. There are 100’s of ways that you can use coconut oil. But, I have come up with 10 great ways that coconut oil can be used topically.

10 Ways To Use Coconut Oil

1) Lip Balm/Lip Gloss

This natural oil gives a lovely glossy sheen when applied on the lips. It’s great for people with sensitive lips who may be allergic to some of the chemicals in conventional lipbalm. Coconut oil is all you need for a chemical-free moisturizer on your lips.

2) Eye Makeup Remover

The skin around our eyes are delicate. With coconut oil, you can use a cotton ball and gently remove your eye makeup. It even removes waterproof mascara. Why do people need to buy those branded chemical-laden eye makeup remover products in the supermarket? Just use coconut oil!

3) Cuticle Treatment

Apply coconut oil on your finger and toe nails to keep them strong and healthy.

4) Body Scrub

An all natural body scrub and exfoliant can simply be made with a mixture of coconut oil and sugar. You can add in other ingredients such as cinnamon, baking soda and oatmeal too if you like.

5) Gets rid of infections

Coconut oil has anti-fungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. So applying this to the affected area will kill infections and speed up healing.

Coconut oil is useful for treating problems such as Athlete’s foot, acne, cold sores, yeast infections and chicken pox. You can add a bit of tea tree oil to increase the strength and kill infection quicker.

6) Stretch Marks

It helps prevent and soften stretch marks on the woman’s body. Just rub some coconut oil for soft and supple skin.

7) Hair Treatment

Coconut oil can be used as a hair conditioner. Massage it in your hair and rinse it out after 10 minutes to condition, strengthen and repair damaged hair. This oil can also be used to ease symptoms of dandruff such as itching and flaking.

8) Natural Deodorant

It’s antibacterial properties mean that coconut oil can be applied straight onto your armpits to keep smell under control by killing bacteria. If you need to have the sweat absorption too, just add some baking soda and corn starch.

Like with any deodorant, don’t apply straight after you have shaved. It would really sting!

9) Shaving Cream:

No need to buy those expensive shaving creams, just use coconut oil. It will keep the razor gliding smoothly while leaving your skin soft and smooth.

10) Sunburn/After Sun Care

Coconut oil is great for preventing sunburn for short exposures. For long exposures, you will need to use sunscreen, as coconut oil does not provide enough protection for your skin.

Coconut oil is also great to use as an after sun care as it helps speed up healing and moisturize the skin. When you do get burned, just make sure you wait until the heat on the skin has cooled down or after a cold shower.

It does depend on the extent of the burn though. Otherwise coconut oil can trap the heat in and do more damage to the skin.

Conclusion

It’s amazing how this natural oil can be used for many things. It’s usages are endless!

It’s useful to keep a bottle of coconut oil at home just in case you need to use it. You can find coconut oil in Amazon, which is located on the right panel for your convenience.

So how about you? What do you use coconut oil for? If you have a favorite usage for coconut oil that didn’t make the list, would love to hear about it. Just leave comments below.

Great article. One other use for coconut oil is, oil pulling. This is where you put a teaspoon in your mouth and swish it around for 20 min and spit it out. IT is said to help break down tarter and repair teeth.

Marc, I haven’t heard of oil pulling before. I think if I stand in the bathroom for 20 minutes swishing coconut oil around my mouth, I would be tired :)
