Crabtree & Evelyn Product Review

Crabtree & Evelyn Product ReviewCrabtree & Evelyn was founded in 1972 and specialises in luxurious personal care products, gourmet foods, gifts, and fragrances.

My first experience with products from Crabtree & Evelyn was way back in the year 2002. I was given a $40 voucher during a work Christmas party to spend on whatever I liked.

So I bought myself a Crabtree & Evelyn summer hill scented bathsoap and the body powder.

When I started to use these products, I noticed that both had a strong and pleasant fragrance. I liked the smell of these products.

It was only the last few years that I started getting more concerned about the products that I use on my body that made me switch to a certified organic brand of products called Miessence. Ever since, I became more aware of harmful ingredients that are commonly used by personal care manufacturers to make their products, I know which brands I should avoid.

One of these brands do include the Crabtree & Evelyn products. They are definitely NOT Natural & Organic. In fact, many of the products have ingredients that I would not like to apply on my body. I will explain why soon.

Occasionally, I still receive Crabtree & Evelyn products as gifts from friends during birthdays and christmas. The most recent products that I received was the Pomegranate Body Lotion (Left side) and the Pomegranate Argan & Grapeseed ultra-moisturising hand therapy (middle picture). The summerhill scented body lotion (Right side) was given to me a few years ago. This body lotion has a very strong floral fragrance, which I will review in this post.

Crabtree & Evelyn Products

All three of these products have a long list of ingredients. I couldn’t even pronounce most of these ingredient names and had to look them up to see what they actually are. Plenty of synthetic ingredients and most of them are quite nasty too.

So let’s have a look at the Crabtree & Evelyn Summer Hill Scented Body Lotion.

Ingredients List

summerhill_ingredientsI used the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Cosmetic Database to analyse each ingredient and check their safety profile. You can find this database in the Resources page. CLICK HERE!

According to EWG, the safety scores range from 0 – 10. Zero means very safe, while 10 means highly toxic substance.

After I have reviewed each ingredient, I will only point out which ingredients are the most hazardous in this ingredients list.

Ingredient with a score of 5 and above:

Linalool, Citronellol, Eugenol, Benzyl cinnamate, Benzyl benzoate, Hydroxycitronellal, Geraniol, Isoeugenol, cinnamyl alcohol, Fragrance, Retinyl Palmitate, and Benzyl Salicylate.

Parabens:

There are 5 paraben ingredients towards the end of the list. This includes methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butyparaben, and isobutylparaben.

Parabens mimic the female hormone, estrogen, and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors. Parabens should really be avoided due to it’s link with breast cancer.

Conclusion:

Many of the ingredients that scored 5 or more are actually fragrance or masking ingredients. They are also known as a human immune system toxicant or allergen. Read more about the dangers of fragrance HERE!

According to EWG, one of the most toxic ingredients on this list with a score of 9 is actually Retinyl Palmitate! This ingredient is composed of palmitic acid and retinol (Vitamin A). It is suggested that application of this ingredient to skin in the presence of sunlight may speed the development of skin tumours and lesions.

Pretty scary stuff! My analysis of one of Crabtree & Evelyn’s bodycare products shows you how unhealthy and harmful this product can be for our body. So this is the reason why I prefer not to use products from this brand and stick with my favorite brand, Miessence

Even though Crabtree & Evelyn do have some very nice smelling products and beautiful packaging, I care too much about my health to use these products.

What are your thoughts? Would you rather smell nice than care about what ingredients you are applying on yourself? Would love to hear your opinions by leaving a comment below.
