What Is Zinc Oxide?
Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound, a natural mineral, and is white in colour.
Why Is Zinc Oxide Used In Sunscreen?
Zinc oxide naturally reflects the damaging ultraviolet rays that cause skin aging and cancer. It is a physical sunscreen that sits on top of our skin. It is a safe and effective ingredient in natural and organic sunscreens with no known adverse reactions, which is why it is often used to treat babies. Since zinc oxide protects against the UVA and UVB spectrum, it is the closest thing to a total sunblock on the market today. There is no other sunscreen ingredient that provides a better and broader sun protection.
“Zinc oxide based sunscreens are considered better than chemical sunscreens”
How Do Chemical Sunscreens Work?
Chemical sunscreens work differently to offer sun protection. They work by absorbing UV rays rather than reflecting them unlike a physical sunscreen. They also contain a variety of harmful ingredients such as:
· Menthyl Anthranilate
Some chemical ingredients are known to cause hormonal disruption, nervous system concerns, allergy triggers, DNA damage, or produce free radicals that are toxic to the cells. To avoid exposing my skin to these harmful ingredients, I use the Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm to protect my skin from sun damage.
Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm Review
The Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm is a water-free nourishing balm with a SPF 15. It doesn’t wash off unless you use soap and water. It has about 22% zinc oxide and have natural and organic ingredients, such as, natural vitamin E, beta carotene and rosemary extract, that have antioxidant properties to protect your skin from sun damage.
Although zinc oxide is the active ingredient in this product, this white powdered mineral will not make you look white when you apply it on your skin. The zinc oxide has been engineered to become micro-fine so that it can easily blend with other ingredients to present a clear and non white appearance.
How To Apply Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm?
All you have to do is give this product a really good mix like this. Apply generously to skin 20 minutes before exposure to sunlight. Then re-apply every two hours.
It should be stored under 30 degrees, so don’t leave it in your hot car during summer time.
Sunscreen is not the only way to protect yourself from sun damage. Remember to cover up with clothes, look for shade or shelter, and wear a hat.
