Many people don’t realize the dangers of synthetic fragrances. Many of our products include the ingredient, fragrance or parfum, to give the product a pleasant scent.
This ingredient is found in many personal care products, such as, shampoos, cosmetics, perfumes, deodorants, body lotions, and skin care products.
Just because the manufacturers include this ingredient in their products, it doesn’t mean that it is safe!
Health Effects Of Synthetic Fragrances
Do you know that synthetic fragrance will expose you to hundreds of chemicals that you know nothing about, and are hazardous to your health? Synthetic fragrance are simply a mixture of chemicals that create a particular scent. To some, the scent may be luxurious and pleasant, and to others it may be a huge turn off.
Different mixtures of chemicals will create many variations of scent. The problem with the ingredients list in many products is that it only list the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’, so there is no way of knowing what harmful chemicals is in the product. Manufacturers like to keep their ‘secret formula’ to themselves!
The main reason why manufacturers use synthetic fragrance in their products is because it’s so much cheaper to produce scent compared to producing them naturally.
When ever I see a bottle of perfume, the first thing I think of is a bottle of poison. That’s really what it is – a cocktail of toxic chemicals!
According to Safe Cosmetics Australia, artificial substances like fragrances are known to cause respiratory reactions like asthma, contact dermatitis as well as cancer and accumulative toxicity.
Natural News says that the list of chemicals in synthetic fragrances often includes formaldehyde, toluene, methylene chloride, benzaldehyde, petroleum, and phthalates. These harmful chemicals cause all kinds of health issues.
In the cosmetic maze shopping companion book, fragrance is not assessed for safe use in cosmetics, and the potential effects include suspected immuno and neuro toxicity, allergic reactions, and asthma. Fragrance is used in most cosmetics and household products.
Pregnant women should avoid synthetic fragrances
One of the toxic chemicals of concern in synthetic fragrance are phthalates as they are known as endocrine disruptors, which mimics human hormones.
According to a report by the University of Maryland, exposure to phthalates may be linked to various health issues, such as, reproductive abnormalities, lower levels of testosterone production in boys, affects male fertility, premature delivery and endometriosis in women.
Women who are pregnant really should avoid perfumes to protect their unborn child from health issues!
To avoid phthalate exposure, you can check the ingredients list of your own personal care products and see if they have ingredients like these:
- DBP (dibutylphthalate)
- DMP (dimethylphthalate)
- DEP (diethylphthalate)
- DEHP (Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate)
- BzBP (benzylbutyl phthalate)
How To Protect Yourself And Your Family?
We all want to smell nice! But, why put your health at risk and you can avoid it and find natural/organic alternatives? Synthetic fragrances need to be avoided as much as possible. It’s important that you read the ingredients labels.
- Look for products that are ‘unscented’, ‘fragrance-free’, or scents that are naturally derived or plant based.
- Choose certified organic products because they do not use synthetic fragrances, only natural scent. I highly recommend Miessence Certified Organic Range.
- Avoid products that have the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ in their ingredient list. Most likely they are synthetic chemicals.
- Buy products from your local health shop or look for brands online that avoid using synthetic fragrances in their products.
Don’t let the manufacturers of personal care and cosmetic products decide what you should be applying on yourself through their clever marketing. It’s all about money and profits for them! What is more important is being informed of the dangers of toxic chemical ingredients, and taking appropriate steps to look after you and your family’s health.
Synthetic fragrances are so common in our products that most people think it’s ok to use. But when the truth comes out about the potential health issues that these toxic chemicals are associated with frequent application, then people need to decide what they want to do about it.
Do they want to keep exposing themselves to hundreds of toxic chemicals everyday? or seek for healthier alternatives?
I personally do not use perfume, only the Miessence Tahitian Breeze Roll-on Deodorant, which has a light and natural scent that keeps my body odor controlled. It really works for me!
